Chelsea have announced a new commercial sponsorship deal with a company few have ever heard of from Japan.
The Yokohama Rubber Company, a company who make tyres for cars, have agreed a five-year shirt deal with Jose Mourinho’s side.
The shirt deal is worth £40m-per-year, meaning that Chelsea should earn £200m from the arrangement.
Chelsea have lauded the new deal on their club website, noting it to be the biggest commercial deal in the club’s history.
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck released a statement saying:
It is an absolute pleasure to welcome Yokohama as our new Official Shirt Partner and we look forward to a successful relationship with them.
Chelsea and Yokohama are a perfect fit. Both are global organisations with a focus on performance and innovation, as well as having huge ambition and an unwavering culture of success.
The Yokohama Rubber Company will replace Samsung as the Chelsea shirt sponsor.
Whilst Chelsea’s deal is indeed significant, it is worth remembering that Manchester United recently agreed a seven-year commercial deal with US car brand Chevrolet, worth around £50m per year.
Chelsea get back to action on Sunday, when they take on Tottenham in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley.
Chelsea are top of the Premier League and are in the last 16 of the Champions League.
